Why Windows & Doors.
Often windows and doors are replaced at the same time. The first and best
reason that comes to mind for me is rather simplistic. That would be because
they are the openings that keep the out-of-doors outside. They are natural wear
points that eventually need attention, like the tires on your car, you only get
so many miles out of a new set. I guess the same could be said about windows and
doors. You only get so many years of service out of them, and like tires, the
better quality you replace the existing ones with, the more mileage or rather
years of service you get out of them.
Others, especially contractors would probably say that the reason we thing of
them together like that is because they fit so well together in a contracting
project. Because of the nature of how windows and doors are replaced, it would
only be natural to replace them at the same time.
When modifications to the exterior or interior of a home need to be made
because of window or door replacements, it would make good sense to do the work
all at one time, keeping the cost down, and controlling the mess and disruption.
Everyone wants to save time and money.
So how would doing the replacements at the same time save time and money?
That’s the easy question to answer. You save money not only because of the new
more energy efficient windows and doors, but also by only having to do the
related setup, preparation and cleanup once instead of multiple times. This is
especially true if you have a contractor do the job.
Many DIY folks don’t think about their time in terms as money when they do a
job for themselves, but hire a contractor to do a job and time spent on the job
and how it relates to money out of your pocket becomes painfully clear. So even
if you do the work yourself, doing the preparation work and cleanup work,
relates directly to the saving of time and money.
So there are a few good reasons to consider doing windows and doors together
as a project if indeed you need them both. Don’t let some fly-by-night outfit
tell you that you can save the cost of the doors by doing them with the windows,
although it might be hard to figure if that were true or not, the truth is, if
you don’t need to replace doors, or don’t want to replace doors then don’t let
the idea of saving a few bucks on someone else’s say so sway your decision. You
are the best person to know what you need and what you don’t. Replacing windows
and waiting to replace doors later or vice versa may be needed due to money or
time constrains, there is no shame in that, don’t let a slick contractor
convince you otherwise.
It’s your home, you should be in charge of when and how you maintain or
upgrade it. Many people see a house as merely a tool for financial gain. They
see it as something to fix up, upgrade and part with to acquire a bigger better
one worth more money as means to financial success. While other see a single
house as a home for a lifetime, something to be cherished and taken care of, a
place to raise children and grow old. For whatever reason you buy a house or
home, know that both are good things, and both need smart decisions when it
comes to replacing windows and doors.
