Casement Windows: Perspective From a Replacement Point of View
Casement windows open much like a door would. Like a door, one side or
the other of the window is hinged, pinned actually. This pin mount
allows the windows to swing open as the operating mechanism is utilized,
usually a hand crank. Some high end casement windows can have electric
motors built in that operate the window. The other side of the window
fastens security usually with cam type latches. Casement windows are
usually the most expensive windows to install, because of the need to
build them with extra hardware that adds expense.
There is one fact that is hard to dispute, that casements are the most
expensive and difficult to maintain in a traditional window sense that is.
Because they open out, they are exposed to the elements especially along the top
edge of the window. Over time the sun, and rain, when we forget to close them
take their toll on these type window more so then standard sliders or double
hung windows.
All that being said, that is of the old school casement windows. Back when
casement windows were primarily built from wood. Being a construction material
that is more susceptible to the damages of the element, You can still purchase
wood casement windows, in fact many people still do, but knowing the truth about
wood casement windows, I just don’t understand why anyone would.
The solution to the problem is to not buy wood casement windows. Wood has
been replaced with materials that are better able to withstand the effects of
the elements over time. Materials such as aluminum, fiberglass, polyvinyl
carbonate. Although window manufactures have improved the manner in which they
manufacture casement windows, most offer more options in the materials then just
wood. So if you are considering replacing old casement windows, it would behoove
you to consider a material other then wood.
It is true that each of the new materials listed at first had their own draw
backs when it came to the manufacture of casement windows, but those
deficiencies have long since been worked out either by redesign of the
manufacture process or by overall better material development.
In conclusion, if you want casement windows, by all means go right ahead and
have them, just don’t make wood your material of choice. One thing new materials
didn’t do for casement windows, was change the fact that they are still more
expensive than other types of windows.
