What the Heck is an Awning Window?
It's surprising that people don't often know what an awning window is,
likewise just as many arent sure what an awning is. To understand what an
awning window is one should first have an idea of what an awning is.
An awning is typically a structure that juts from the side of a building at a
moderate angle to protect it from rain; sun and wind, usually over a patio area
or large window area. An awning many times will cover an outdoor patio area. The
advantages of an awning are that they offer protection from the elements while
allowing fresh air to circulate around the area.
In the same manner the awning window opens outward at an angle from the
bottom to allow fresh air in while protecting the room from moderate rain and
wind. Awning windows typically open out from the bottom, in this way theyd
allow the air to circulate in while protecting the room from the outside
elements that might do damage to interior walls and furnishings . Awning windows
are typically installed in conjunction with other types of windows, many times
above or below large picture windows and often above doors.
Many times people opt to install awning windows where normally a picture
window has been or would be installed. By doing this they can add ventilation in
areas where none was available before. Bathrooms are often candidates for awning
windows using etched or opaque glass for privacy.
There really is no limitation to where an awning window could be installed.
Most manufacturers of awning windows offer them in many types and styles. Most
new awning windows rely on hardware much like that used in casement windows to
open and close the windows.
Because awning windows are hinged at the top and rely on hardware to open,
larger windows typically will open less than smaller windows. This is done to
minimize the amount of stress on hinges and hardware that can typically be
caused by high winds.
Some awning windows along with having a crank mechanism to open the window
will have latches on either side at different positions to help support the
window while it is open. If you live in a region where high wind is a concern
you may want to install windows that have these supports for extra protection of
your windows and hardware.
Awning windows normally will have a pressure rating. The higher the pressure
rating the more wind the window will withstand. If youre unsure about this
pressure rating of awning windows please ask your window professional about it
when purchasing or ordering windows.
Awning windows can typically replace any style window except where physically
passing objects through them might be necessary. Many manufacturers carrying a
few standardized styles and sizes of these types of windows. But just like any
other replacement window awning windows can be custom ordered to any size or
style to fulfill individual need. And as with any other window replacement it is
always wise to use the best quality window that your budget will allow.
